The Future of Internet Marketing

futureInternet marketing has been through a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the last decade with many saying that there is no future in trying to make a living online because we are being squeezed out by over zealous search engines, particularly Google, continually moving the goalposts.

It’s a bit like the modern media, most of the news is negative with very little positive information written or broadcast about. The interesting thing is, it’s the people who actually run a successful business online, rather than the doom and gloom merchants merely reading and writing about it, who know that Internet Marketing is an exciting and profitable business to be involved in.

Of course, many of the doom and gloom merchants are those with a get rich quick mindset who were involved in scam activities such as AdSense websites only to see their sites de-indexed by Google and their fragile scam business destroyed virtually overnight.

This was just over 10 years ago and the trick was to build a very simple website using auto page building software which created thousands of pages rich in keywords based on a niche theme and cover them all with Google AdSense ads.

The pages on these sites contained the vital keywords within textual content, which read like gobbledygook to a human reader but the search engine bots in those days were not capable of distinguishing between good and trash content, so they naively sent tons of free traffic to these sites.

Because AdSense was and still is a form of contextual advertising, a visitor being faced with trash content, quickly clicked on an AdSense ad in search of something more relevant to their search term. The owner of the scam site earned money from Google each time someone clicked on one of their ads and by banging out hundreds if not thousands of these trash sites, it’s not hard to see that they were making a killing out of it.

Of course, Google knew what was going on and manually de-indexed a site as soon as one of their human monitors discovered it. However, the scammer would simply bang out another site and it was impossible for Google to keep up. That is until they developed an algorithm, which enabled their bots to do the monitoring automatically.

This led to what is referred to as the Google slap. Unfortunately, this initially crude algorithm resulted in some genuine sites being de-indexed and so caused some anxiety amongst the IM fraternity at that time. This led to even more doom and gloom about the future of Internet Marketing.

Then came what is known as article marketing, which attracted the scammers to develop article generation software which either plagiarized from other quality sites or simply generated keyword rich text which fooled the Google algorithms into believe it was good content. Again, these scammers were only interested in get rich quick scams.

Eventually, Google was able to refine their algorithms to be able to slap this too and of course out came the doom and gloom merchants again, saying that Internet Marketing is dead.

The opposite is true. With the exception of a few genuine sites caught out in the crossfire, the scam sites have virtually disappeared and the users of search engines to find good quality content on good content rich websites is adding creditability to Internet Marketing and generating growth in the market as a result.

The future of Internet Marketing has never looked better.

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for sharing with us a history lesson about the major events which caused major shifts in Internet Marketing. I’ve always wondered what the fuss about “Google Slap” was and now thanks to your post, I now know what it is, so thanks again.

Now from your blog post, you seem like someone who know a lot about google, and whilst on my online travels, I’ve noticed that there’s been quite a few blogs talking about content marketing and how there has been an upsurge in late 2013 and that 2014 will be another year where the use of this type of marketing style/strategy will increase, do you think this is the case? What do you think that next trend of internet marketing will be?

Looking forward to your next blog posts

    Hi Sky,

Thanks for your positive feedback, much appreciated:-)

“content marketing”, well I’m not too sure exactly what that is, but my best guess is it’s to do with good quality ‘original’ content on your site. I talk about this in my post, particularly with regards to “article marketing” which, I believe is the main form of “content marketing”. I have quite a lot to say about this, so I will publish a new post entitled ‘Using PLR Articles’, so watch this space and let me know what you think:-)
